The Temple Dome Old City, Jerusalem, - Israel

“The Dome of the Rock” is a shrine located in the old city of Jerusalem. In the early 11th century the Crusaders captured Jerusalem who believed “The Dome of the Rock” was the sight of the Temple of Solomon. Later on, when Jerusalem was recaptured “The Dome of the Rock” was reconstructed as a Muslim Shrine as it was believed that Prophet Muhammad had ascended to Heaven from this Mount.

Experience

Being a history maniac, it took me more than a day to explore the old city of Jerusalem with my map in tow. The old city took me back in time to Roman History which were laced withcrimes upon the Jews.A history lesson worth it. Israel offers you a wholesome experience like never had before. Bethlehem and the Dead Sea are places to visit on your bucket list.

Travel Tips

  • Best travel time is April to November.
  • Israel has much to explore, from Nazareth in the north to its west bank, Eilat in the South, Tel Aviv in the west and Dead Sea at its border in the east.
  • Bethlehem, the birth place of Jesus Christ offers you sanctity and peace once inside the church. Be sure to be swift in seeking blessings since, there are always many devotees in line.
  • Dead Sea, in itself is a natural wonder. You just have to take a dip in this highly saline place on earth. The most important point is to avoid getting this water into your eyes as you will be screaming your gut out if you do. I did!
  • The mud baths are a must as the mud is scientifically proven to heal you of any skin issues.

Highlights

  • The Old City of Jerusalem is divided into four quarters belonging to Christians, Muslims, Jews&Armenians. Set-aside a full day to explore the lifestyle of the inhabitants living in the quarters.
  • Besides the Temple Dome, the VIA DOLOROSA, the Western Wall, the Mount of Olives, the Church of the Holy SEPULCHRE are also sights to explore. I would definitely recommend a guided tour through the quarters to get a taste of history.
  • The new city of Jerusalem is very different from the old walled city. The new city has different cuisines for food lovers and some retail therapy too.
