Barrow, Alaska, U.S.A. -

Fairbanks – This is the largest city in Alaska and if you are lucky enough, you can get to view the spectacular northern lights between late September and early April and of course, you can pan for your own gold at the “Old Gold Dredge”. Just the place for energetic outdoor types for hiking, canoeing, skiing, etc. Those interested in Art & Culture could visit the Morris Thompson Cultural Center and even the Aurora Ice Museum.

Experience

My most memorable trip has been to Alaska. The enduring vastness of wildlife and astounding landscape makes this a top priority travel destination for nature lovers. From the Fjords, to the Glaciers, the National Park and of course Barrow, being at the Arctic Circle is too much to ask for.

Travel Tips

  • Alaska calls for a year round travel, June for Wild Flowers and birdings, August and September for Fall Foliage, September to March for the northern lights and of course for the famous Iditarod Race November and December are the months to be.
  • Booking for cruise liners should be done a year in advance and land travel with the wild life tours and sledging to be booked in advance is preferred.

Highlights

  • Barrow – this is the northern most city in the United Sates located on the Arctic Ocean north of Arctic circle. It is been home to Native Inupiat Eskimo people for over thousand years. It is accessible from Anchorage by a flight. Be prepared to rake in the striking white snow and frozen seas around you!
  • Alaska’s largest spectators sport is the THE IDITAROD which is one of the great endurance tests in sport, with competitors mushing sled dogs across miles of snow and ice in temperatures as low as 60 degree F below zero. It starts from Anchorage every March and ends 8 to 15 days later in Nome.
  • Mount McKinley stands as the tallest peak in North America, it is also known as Denali, “The High One” by the indigenous Athabascans of Central Alaska. This is known to be the primary attractions at the Denali National Park which lies at 125 miles south of Fairbank. You will be dazzled with its grandeur and the variety of landscape. If you are lucky you could spot grizzlies, moose and golden eagles. The best places to stay are Camp Denali and The North Face Lodge.
  • The Alaskan Coast Line is one of the most beautiful and you could experience it from your ship while sailing the Inside Passage. Be prepared for a dramatic landscape with snowcapped mountains, deep rain forests, a maze of islands that are home to whales, sea lions, sea otters, seals. Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau are ports of disembarkment, which have great surprises for each visitor. Cruises can be taken from Vancouver or Anchorage
  • For the lover of wildlife, The Kenai Peninsula has much in store for you. Seward, acts as a Gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park and the Harding Icefield. This park is named for the numerous Fjords carved by glaciers moving down the mountains from the Icefields. The field is source of 38 Glaciers. This park is also home to the variety of marine mammals. DAY CRUISES with the KENAI FJORDS tours can be opted from Seward to view the most exotic scene of Ice Calving.
  • The most SCENIC RAIL LINE Known as the WHITE PASS & YUKON ROUTE RAIL ROAD is a marvel of engineering despite the harsh weather conditions. It takes you across mountains, glaciers and gorges and in the process you climb 3000 feet. Can be accessible from Skagway.
